Precautions & Pain management after the surgery

Picture
  1. Apply an ice pack on the cheek on the implanted location for 2 days after the surgery.
  2. Avoid excessive exercise, overworking, sauna, or bath for 3 days after surgery.
  3. Do not brush the operated area for 2-3 days. Use mouthwash twice a day for 7 days.
  4. Avoid drinking and smoking for 2 weeks.
  5. Chew foods with the non-operated area of the mouth and avoid hot foods in the meantime.
  6. In case of maxillary sinus surgery, do not blow your nose excessively and do not spit.
  7. If bleeding is serious, place a cold-wet gauze in your mouth. If bleeding continues, visit the dentist for an adequate treatment.
  8. Swelling may be present for 2-3 days after the operation, Apply ice packs for the first 2 days and if swelling is more acute, use of hot pack may be helpful for relief of the symptom. If the pain in the swollen region seems unusual, visit the dentist for an adequate follow-up treatment.

Necessity of hygienic oral management

Like natural teeth, plaques can be attached to implant surface causing inflammation near surrounding mucosa. For patients who wish to keep their implants strong and stable for a long time, it is critical to thoroughly manage oral hygiene every day.

This requires active tooth brushing and regular dental check up.

Toothbrushing and soft tissue management

Periodontal disease may be prevented with regular and general brushing method. In order to improve the cleanliness of periodontal tissues and teeth surface, use the bass technique (gingiva massage) and *modified bass technique with added rotation. The dental plaque between teeth may be effectively removed when an interproximal brush is used for the surrounding of implant. However, the most important thing is the patient’s self-awareness and regular visit to dental clinics for an oral examination.

*Modified Bass Technique

Give short vibrations for 5-13 times from side to side gently inserting brush on tilted 45 degrees on the tooth-gingiva junction. And then, sweep downwards on occlusal surface of maxilla and upwards on occlusal surface of mandible.
